SEMEN ASSESSMENT
Standardised assessment of livestock semen is now available at our network of semen standards reference laboratories located around Australia in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. Each laboratory is led by a research scientist who holds a PhD in animal reproduction and is recognised independently as a world-leader in semen assessment and sperm biology research.

All packages examine semen samples for post-thaw motility, sperm concentration and morphological abnormalities using procedures adapted from Salamon’s Artificial Insemination of Sheep and Goats, Society for Theriogenology Manual for Breeding Soundness Examination of Bulls, and Veterinary Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation. Test results are compared with standards of quality used by the artificial breeding industry and associated communities with reference to professional societies such as the Australian Reproduction Veteriarians, Australian Cattle Veterinarians, Society for Theriogenology, and National Association of Animal Breeders where possible.
PACKAGE 2
Basic package
Includes sperm concentration assessment and subjective analysis of abnormal spermatozoa by light microscopy. Thermoresistance testing including incubation of the sperm samples at 37°C during which the percentage of motility at 0h, 2h, 4h and 6h is subjectively assessed by light microscopy.
PACKAGE 3
Basic package + CASA
Includes sperm concentration assessment and subjective analysis of abnormal spermatozoa by light microscopy. Thermoresistance testing including incubation of the sperm samples at 37°C during which the percentage of motility at 0h, 2h, 4h and 6h is objectively assessed via CASA computer assisted sperm analysis with state-of-the-art HT-IVOSII or Microptic systems, using Leija fixed depth slides.
PACKAGE 4
Basic package + CASA +Â Flow cytometry
Includes sperm concentration assessment and subjective analysis of abnormal spermatozoa by light microscopy. Thermoresistance testing including incubation of the sperm samples at 37°C during which the percentage of motility at 0h, 2h, 4h and 6h is objectively assessed via CASA computer assisted sperm analysis with state-of-the-art HT-IVOSII or Microptic systems, using Leija fixed depth slides. Using flow cytometry, sperm are also analysed at all incubation time points with one dual stain to provide functional information (e.g. percentage of live, acrosome intact cells)
